Violence Survey Results
I would like to thank all of you who have taken the time to respond to the ACLU Gay Rights Project's anti-gay violence survey. Your responses are very helpful, because they provide statistics that will allow us to show our elected officials that hate crimes and other sorts of discrimination against gay men and

lesbians are a real problems here in the Greater Cleveland area.
I have compiled some preliminary data from the surveys, and would like to share some of those results with you. Because the survey is very extensive, I am going to spread this report our over two or three columns.
To date, we have has a total of 89 surveys returned. Approximately two thirds of the respondents are male, the other third are female. Most are between the ages of 21 and 44. Although many of the respondents are "out" to family and friends, a good number have not told colleagues at work.

sexual orientation. About half of these people did not report the attacks to the police because they felt that the police would have been unsympathetic.
The figures are a little better for personal robbery, with only one fifth of the respondents saying that they had been robbed. Most of those people did not believe that they has been robbed because they are gay men or lesbians, although they still hesitated to report the crime to the police for fear that their orientation would be exposed and because they believe the police would be unsympathetic.
Although one third of the respondents said that their homes or apartments had been robbed, the majority indicated that such crimes were not directed at them
because of their sexual orientation. report these crimes to the police. 20 perPeople were generally not afraid to cent of those surveyed said that their property has been deliberately damaged. In several cases, this damage was because the person was a gay man or a lesbian. Many of these people did not report such vandalism to the police.
The next meeting of the ACLU of Ohio Gay Rights Project will be May 21, 1990 at 7:30, at the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center. All are invited to attend. We will be continuing our work crimination on the basis of sexual orientowards preparing some anti-distation legislation for the City of Cleveland.
